I’m getting very excited to head off to Vienna now. Things are coming together, and the part I hate the most, packing, is almost done. This is the first trip where I’ve had to take all this camera equipment with me, so it can feel a little daunting. My apartment is a cute little two-room place in the heart of the old city, tourist attractions and the gay area. The best part is that it is 52 Euros a night, and they are throwing in my internet for free. For anyone who travels, you know that

The Glamour Begins with touch down in Vienna: IAS 2010

Oh my god it’s been a lot of work to finally arrive in this Vienna apartment in which I now sit. My July 12th, midnight flight was the latest I’ve ever flown out to Europe and I kind of like it.

Oh my god it’s been a lot of work to finally arrive in this Vienna apartment in which I now sit. My July 12th, midnight flight was the latest I’ve ever flown out to Europe and I kind of like it. I was so worn out by all the stuff I had to do before leaving right up until the last moment. By the time we took off I actually felt like I could shut my eyes, and eventually I did. The eight hours passed like nothing, so I must have fallen asleep. When disturbed again they were serving breakfa

Part One Morning: Apparently Google relies heavily on what is in the post title for searches, hence I am including IAS 2010 in every title. I wanted to mention this apartment as I really like it. It's run by a gay fellow and has only a few units. The decor is nice enough, and it probably nicer than the apart. I rented in Paris. There are less amenties, but those I can give up for a rate of 52 Euros a night. I'm close to the subway, and getting to and in the apartment was seamless. There is

Last night I took a stroll in my gay neighbourhood. This was a great time to play with my new camera in low light settings. The place wasn't looking too gay, and when just that thought had crossed my mind a small group of guys were at a table outside a coffeeshop. One of the fellows was laying across one guy, and this young slim fellow with only shoes and very short shorts, ran minced into the street. When the driver honked his horn at him, the prancing pedestrian raised both hands and gave h

The Bliss of a Lightening Storm: IAS 2010

Sitting in my dark living room I communed with the sound of the rain while I watched the thunderous lightening flashes light up to 15-foot ceiling room.

Sitting in my dark living room I communed with the sound of the rain while I watched the thunderous lightening flashes light up to 15-foot ceiling room. This, was by all accounts, one of the simplest, yet memorable moments for me.  It is a rare moment for me to not have sound going on from somewhere. And in moments like this, it seems that all the aspects of being in Europe come together for a moment that was felt on a level more profound than walking around looking at the architecture.

A Stoll on the Danube: IAS Vienna 2010

There are really two stories going on in this post, ok, well three if you count my riverside location shoot for Cabbagetowns Next Supermodel. It doesn't get much more glamorous than heat wave shots at the side of the Danube.

There are really two stories going on in this post, ok, well three if you count my riverside location shoot for Cabbagetowns Next Supermodel. It doesn't get much more glamorous than heat wave shots at the side of the Danube. Again, it is a very hot day. My friend and I take a stroll along the Danube. On each side there are the Paris-inspired fake beaches, lounging chairs, boats and bars. At night it is a hub of activity. Bordered on each side with a striking mix of old, Hilter era, and modern

In Vienna, always expect the at time unexpected, or at least the something not thought of. And this time it was the weather. Gaining entrance to the Life Ball too more time that we realized, and they had begun the program and at this point we hadn’t realized why. Then the rain began and the crowd began putting on T-Mobile sponsored raincoats on. The stage was huge, and never have I seen a fundraiser such as this. As we kept saying, only in Europe. Whoopie, and we had missed her as the show

What a day. Even though it didn’t feel like anything was going right, a few things did. I just wrapped up writing out my interview with Melanie Thompson, the chair of the international AIDS Society’s USA treatment guidelines panel, and threw in a quote from our renowned Canadian researcher Mark Wainburg. The interview with Melanie is a bit of a teaser with the essential information in it The DVD extra in terms of a video will happen later as just when I went to upload the video I discove

Human RIghts Now & Canada Booth Trashed: IAS Vienna 2010

The last 24 hours are a bit of a blur. My friend and I boarded a train to Budapest. It was time to get out of Vienna.

I haven’t posted for a few days on here. This has been for a couple of reasons. The first is time, it takes a long time on this computer to do one post with lots of photos, about an hour. This is my indication that I’ll be needing a more powerful laptop for big events. The second is that getting video interviews is really difficult at the conference when everyone is rushing back and forth, and I have no assistant to help me out holding the camera, or what have you. The third is that I hav

Last night I had my gay night out with a few friends. I’m not one to be going out to the bars when I travel for a few reasons. The number one is that I don’t drink, and that usually isn’t a huge problem, but still, most of these places are about drinking, and suddenly I feel rather socially awkward. At our first stop, Village, we hung out in the smoke-filled very hot little bar chatting and watching the videos (music – get your mind out of the gutter). Here I starting chatting with a
