POZ-TO March event coming up

On March 18 we published an interview between four time Juno winner Billy Newton-Davis and DJ Relentless. They will both be attractions at the POZ-TO Dance party at Club 120 March 3, an event specifically for the poz and poz-positive community, which continues monthly. Details are available below. While last time we featured Billy, our own DJ Relentless aka Alphonso King Jr aka Jade Elektra is a fascinating, mulkti-faceted personality in his own right. He doesn’t write here much about being

DJ Relentless talks to Billy Newton-Davis

Over the past couple of weeks, I've developed a rapport with Billy Newton-Davis following being introduced by Black Cap’s Executive Director, Shannon Ryan. I have been booking entertainment for my new monthly dance party, POZ-TO (which benefits local AIDS organizations) and I am happy to announce that Mr. Davis has agreed to be our special guest on the March 3rd event, along with Miss High Performance 2011-12, Lady G. It’s the Saturday afternoon after the huge snow storm here in Toronto.

 New music reviews

I have written a few blurbs about Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, but now I am happy to announce that they have crossed over into the mainstream. They first caught my attention with their beautifully crafted track “Same Love”. I was watching Ellen one afternoon and she brought them on to perform it. The lyrics really touched me because it was the first time I ever heard a straight Hip Hop artist rap about gay rights. Well, their latest single, “Thrift Shop” has topped the Billboard chart

Gwen Stefani wants to appropriate your culture

Megan DePutter asks “Honestly, whose idea was it to make that stupid No Doubt video?"

Gwen Stefani wants to appropriate your culture

The No Doubt video (no longer available from You Tube, thanks to online uproar) was a spectacle of racist appropriation of Native culture, featuring fetishized, stereotypical, and tokenized elements of Native American culture in some kind of sick cowboy & Indians fantasy display.  It went as far as dressing up Gwen Stefani in an “Indian princess” costume, to act out a (supposedly) sexy, tied-up, helpless Pocahontas-type figure – which is ironic given that the story of Pocahontas is

DJ Relentless speaking about music again – and a round-up of fall releases, with another free download.

More music

The fall season is when the music industry usually releases its heavy hitters. For example, Grammy winner Alicia Keys has a new single out called “Girl On Fire” featuring Nicki Minaj. When Alicia was a new artist I really liked her. She was a breath of fresh R&B air, but I haven’t really enjoyed any of her contributions since “You Don’t Know My Name”. Yeah....the hook on “Empire State” was sweet, but I don’t think her idea of R&B/Hip Hop has translated into today’s

Another music post from DJ Relentless about finding a new home.

Relentlessly changing venues

So, a couple of weeks ago I wrote about changing my habits when it comes to the Toronto Nightlife. Well, boy did I ever! I had been wanting to hear some real House Music. The kind that I grew to love in NYC. The kind that was a direct descendent of Disco and R&B. Where names like Tom Moulton, Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan and Kevin Saunderson were considered pioneers. Because if you think that folks like Deadmau5, Tiesto and David Guetta are House DJ’s you definitely have an education

I recently started getting requests for a track called “Cry” by the Bingo Players. At first (being that I am that old) I thought of “Cry”by Godley & Creme and part of me felt that it would have been brilliant to have dug up this 80’s classic and update it for the kids today. So, when I finally got it through my digital pool, I was surprised to find that it is a filtered track that samples a couple of lines from Brenda Russell’s “Piano In The Dark” on a loop. It’s a catc

You Can Lead A Horse To Water And You Can Make It Drink

In this day and age of over stimulation and excessive technology, the average person living in a large city has too many choices of food, drink and where to spend their time. But the average person tends to be a creature of habit. They tend to eat at the same places. They send to order the same drinks. And they most definitely tend to go the same clubs. Why? Because of comfort in the knowledge that they know what to expect.  I remember back in 1980 for my 13th birthday my mother couldn’t a

 RELENTLESS REWIND (A Sunday Affair)

I just started a new night over at WAYLA Bar on Queen Street East on August 23rd. After an absence from the Eastside, the new management decided to bring me back. I started there with a retro night and I wanted to do another one. So, I am spinning all the hits from the 90’s.  Hey...remember when Madonna's "Sex Book" was a scandal? Do you remember when Biggie and 2Pac were still alive? Do you remember when Michael Jackson and Prince were the same color? This was the decade that brought us

HIV-positive country and western singer–songwriter Hinson was living a secret life. He’d already come out as bisexual – the first in Nashville to do so. But that was only the start.

Jimbeau Hinson

Poz magazine reported recently  "Nashville is all loving and supportive, on its face," says Charles "Hoss" Burns, once a high-profile country-music deejay on WSIX in Nashville (see "Good Morning, Nashville"). "But when it comes right down to it, being HIV positive can easily screw up your career and your life here. It's still not something that's easy to say in this town?” Here’s what his website says about him. “In 1996, Jimbeau Hinson was seeing the financial rewards of “Party Cro

The Latest Dish

As I read the latest headlines in the entertainment news, I totaly feel like I’m back in High School. Elton John and Madonna in a war of words. Beyonce and Jay Z called out on being selfish. And all those cheesy songs on the charts, but everyone is listening to them anyway.  “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” (Ceilie from The Color Purple). It seems ever few months, with the help of the internet, somebody has something to say about someone else. I keep hearing that

An Intimate Evening with Jade Elektra

Given Jade Elektra’s reputation as a dance floor diva known best for her fierce bitch tracks, one doesn’t expect an intimate release from Jade Elektra but, here it is – An Intimate Evening with Jade Elektra, Live in Concert, a collection of thirteen tracks in a lounge/cabaret setting. This is a live recording – in fact a very live recording, so expect in between song banter, odd technical glitches, but more importantly a real feeling for being in the room.  Which, for those who know T

RELENTLESS SPEAKING ABOUT MUSIC

Back in April my ex-manager sent me a track by this 19 year named Azealia Banks. The track was “212”. The first thing that struck me about the track was it was a throwback to the late 80’s and early 90’s when artists like Queen Latifah, Monie Love and The Jungle Brothers mixed Hip Hop with NY Style House. And then I started investigating her origins, only to discover that she is from my old neighborhood in Harlem.  Well, that would explain it. If you walked around 150th and
