Nicholas Flood talks drama, fame and creative journeys with Canada’s notorious transsexual performance artist.

Two critically acclaimed one woman shows in the last twelve months.  A book of academic theory being published about her and her work.  Various upcoming multimedia projects.  Nicholas Flood talks drama, fame and creative journeys with Canada’s notorious transsexual performance artist. “Excuse me, are you Nina?” asks one of two young high school girls approaching us inside the desert arboretum in Allen Gardens.  They’re probably fourteen. Nina nods, not turning her a

HIV is my reality: Robert Breining

Something you may not know about me is that I am a reality show junkie. I watch all kinds from shows from Survivor & Hell’s Kitchen to Solitary.

[This is Robert Breinings second post as a guest writer. He is the founder of Poziam, a social netowrking website for people living with HIV, including the weekly blog radio program Pozam, along with all the rest of his cyber activist duties] I find watching everyday people put into stressful situations makes for great television. I think the first show I was hooked on was MTV’s Real World. The San Francisco season was the one season that hit home with me. When I first saw Pedro Zamora, I fe

Looking for Guest Writers

published: September, 30, 2010 Written by // Guest Authors - Revolving Door Categories // Guest Authors

PositiveLite.com is looking for guest writers of all backgrounds, HIV+, or an ally to contribute to Canada’s only online blogzine for people living with HIV, and our supporters

We provide an online space for our readership, and writers to explore their lives beyond our diagnosis; all the while not ignoring that HIV is an important influence that shapes our life experience. Additionally, the “lite” refers to having a website that does take on issues around HIV, but also offers information that can be informative, and even entertaining. It is this mix that explores people living with HIV in a more holistic way. Guest writers offers a change to publish your work wi

I wanted my first blog for Positivelite.com to be about how I got to where I am today. I wasn't always as open about my HIV status. It took me about five years to accept it myself and move forward. I want to take you back about nine years ago.

[Editor's note: Please welcome our latest in guest writers Robert Breining, the creator of Poziam, a social networking site for those who are HIV positive. This is his story, and what I hope will be the first of more appearances on PositiveLite.com]   I can't tell you how many times I'd go to a bathhouse for what I convinced myself was "just for a couple of hours." But then I'd return home tweaked out three days later. I called those times tweakends. All I'd have to do while at the bathhous

“ Hot Vienna Moments” by Shari Margolese

published: September, 13, 2010 Categories // Guest Authors

Admittedly the timeliness factor is missing from this blog since this conference took place almost 2 months ago...

Editor's note: Shari Margolese is a friend, and a long time activist on women's issues, and much more. Shari attended the International AIDS Conference in Vienna last July. I asked if she could write up her perspective of the conference to give another point of view. I wanted to thank her for taking time out of her busy schedule to put this together for me.   Although I tried to resist resorting to clichés from the super hot hit 70’s song “Vienna” by Billy Joel, much of the tune that

Ron Rosenes is PositiveLite’s first guest writer. Ron will be the first to admit his list of “firsts” are going smaller and smaller. It’s an honour to break him in as our first contributor. It’s not enough that I must suffer the slings and arrows of ageist men who reject my advances on a regular basis when I cruise on line.  OK so I lie about my age.  What does anyone think when they read ages that end in the number 9?  Liar liar pants on fire, a guy’s gotta do what

I was infected with HIV in 1985 from my fiancé who shot dope as a teen in New York.

Please welcome Vickie Lynn in next in our guest contributor series. This is her first blog post, and I'm thrilled she has joined our PositiveLite.com family.   I was infected with HIV in 1985 from my fiancé who shot dope as a teen in New York. What a gift he gave me. I spent the next few years in a drunken, coked out haze of parties and hangovers. I made a conscious choice; if I was dying (that is what I believed at the time), I was going to go out with a bang. And what a bang I made

I am almost embarrassed that my second blog has taken so long to write.  I do have a good excuse . . . a new puppy in my life; he’s 10 weeks old.  It has been a long time since I had a puppy and I forgot how much work they could be.  Eat, sleep, play, and bathroom breaks, but not always in that order!  He is paper-trained; I take him outside and as soon as we get back inside, he runs to the paper and does his business.  I am sure he will learn soon. His name is T-B

People who are HIV positive have had a long history of playing the HIV ‘waiting game'

People who are HIV positive have had a long history of playing the HIV ‘waiting game’ When HIV was first discovered, we all waited for treatment.  We waited for medications, anything that would help stop the virus from killing us. We waited for doctors who were willing to see us; in the beginning very few were. Some of us waited for death; wanting it to come quickly and rid us of our pain. We waited for our government to respond to the crisis; we waited a long time. We waited for co

This week, while PositiveLite.com's one-man show goes to Vienna, I've decided that (strange referring oneself in first and third person) that it's a moment to go lite, and do a little shameless promotion of one of DJ Relentless alter ego Jade Elektra. Jade, who stars in her new show at Crews & Tangos, Jaded, which can be caught every Saturday night from 7 until 9. I personally say that it is a great show that moves along quickly, this can be a rare feat in Toronto. Many of Jade's guests

Thanks to improved medical care and better HIV medications, today many people with HIV are living longer and healthier lives.

[note from editor - I've included this as a guest post, written by the Ontario HIV Treatment Network, whose important study needs to get out there. If you fit the bill and are able to participate, please do!] Thanks to improved medical care and better HIV medications, today many people with HIV are living longer and healthier lives. Many of us are employed or seeking meaningful employment. In doing so, we face challenges associated with living with HIV and finding jobs and workplaces that me
