Out of the Grey

Drizzle and Fog. It’s inevitable if you live near the ocean. This is my reality living in St.John’s, Newfoundland. When the fog bank rolls in, you can expect it to sit on your head and fill your mind with images that linger in a monochromatic haze. Kind of like the day when I was first diagnosed HIV Positive. The days following that news were heavy and grey. Before long, it became apparent that the forecast had to change on the horizon. Would the sun break through the humdrums? Here and no

Some colors you can’t mix. They have to be bought….primary red, yellow and blue. Other secondary colors are created when you mix the primaries in different combinations… you get green, orange and purple. Now take a primary and mix it with a secondary and out come beautiful hues of red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, red-violet, blue violet and blue green. Therein lies the mystery of color…you have to start with something to create something new. Life is a mix…we all start

I See Red

Close your eyes and picture the color RED. Really, try it for one sec. You may have pictured apple red, or cherry red or Coca-Cola red.

Close your eyes and picture the color RED. Really, try it for one sec. You may have pictured apple red, or cherry red or Coca-Cola red. Now, if a room full of people were to do this exercise, the perceptions of red would be endless. Now, another test… think HIV. I know you get where this exercise is going. Individual perceptions about the HIV experience vary like the shades and tints of red. You can be cool magenta in your thoughts, almost complacent, or you can be warm (blood red), seeing t

Have HIV…Will Travel.

If I had known that working at an AIDS Service Organization would have brought travel and education opportunities, I would have signed up way before I became Positive. Not sign up for the disease (what would I be thinking!), but definitely get involved in some capacity at an ASO. As a former volunteer and now a front-line worker, I’ve been challenged, stretched, stifled, energized, defeated, stimulated, angry, satisfied, exhausted and rewarded.

Pure joy is a precious commodity. Happiness, in contrast, is attainable but can be fleeting.

Pure joy is a precious commodity. Happiness, in contrast, is attainable but can be fleeting. I was recently thinking that as I get older, there are fewer opportunities to have a rip roaring good time. I’m capable of diving in if the opportunity arises but opportunities are random and even rare…especially working in the field of HIV prevention, education and support. I recently met Brian, owner of positivelite.com and realized that his interesting wacky way to look at the world (with smar

My temps have been up lately. Seems my barometer to handle idiotic situations that are occurring daily around me has finally peaked, only to be fired up by this season’s unexpected heat wave. When summer heat becomes hard to bear…what do we do?…well, we bear it all! Shirts come off, bathing suits go on, and we even accommodate the humidity by parading around the house in underwear (no memory of winter’s flannel pjs) while fans and air conditioners do their thing. We will do anything

In every open blue sky, there’s a focal point to be found. Whether a bird or plane moves through the expanse or a drifting cloud catches your eye, you will look for something to observe and make a mental note of its movement and impact. Options now are broader for HIV Positive people …more treatment combinations, more, programs, services and resources to avail of, and longer life spans which have opened up the possibility of returning to work, starting new relationships (sero-cordant or s

Statement from the Global Young People Living with HIV Consultation Amsterdam, June 2010. We, the participants of the Global Young People Living with HIV (YPLHIV) Consultation, came together in Amsterdam in June 2010, to discuss priorities within the YPLHIV community. Through this consultation we learned that HIV-positive young people (aged 15-30) have a diverse set of concerns, some common

It’s not enough that I must suffer the slings and arrows of ageist men who reject my advances on a regular basis when I cruise on line.  OK so I lie about my age.  What does anyone think when they read ages that end in the number 9?  Liar liar pants on fire, a guy’s gotta do what

I was infected with HIV in 1985 from my fiancé who shot dope as a teen in New York.

Please welcome Vickie Lynn in next in our guest contributor series. This is her first blog post, and I'm thrilled she has joined our PositiveLite.com family.   I was infected with HIV in 1985 from my fiancé who shot dope as a teen in New York. What a gift he gave me. I spent the next few years in a drunken, coked out haze of parties and hangovers. I made a conscious choice; if I was dying (that is what I believed at the time), I was going to go out with a bang. And what a bang I made
