Time for true confessions – I don’t watch television. I don’t even have cable. So when my twenty-something girlfriend Samantha phoned me in a frenzy of excitement to say that Adam Lambert was coming I had no idea of whom she was speaking. She asked if I wanted to join her , her mum and her brother to go. I confessed nothing. I acted surprised and excited about the offer and accepted immediately. Then I got onto the phone and called one of my other twenty something girlfriends and asked

Having exhausted, and been exhausted by, the summer mega-movies to date, I went to the review cinema on Mt. Pleasant this week to see a small Italian gem of a film “Mid-August Lunch.” It had lasted at the first run cinemas for a few days (even though it got glowing reviews ) so I had missed it.It’s the sweet, but not saccharine, kind of film that only the Italians can make. On the surface, it’s about a middle-aged man, who kept reminding me of Placido Domingo so I expected him to bre

That sums up my knowledge of art. Occasionally I can tell a Degas ( hint: he paints ballet dancers), or Manet ( hint: he paints waterflowers) or Picasso ( hints: he had a blue period and he paints a lot of people with their facial parts in odd places.) This does not stop me from going to see art shows or commenting about them , along the lines of “nice colours”, “great shoes” “wow that’s big” or”wow that’s small.” Got the idea. Good, now that you have an idea of my rating

I went to the movies last night with a straight construction guy friend of mine. ( Let your fantasies run wild.) It is always a time of compromise for me because I really don’t like many blow ‘em up, shoot ‘em up movies unless they are really well done or have eye candy  in them so the movie is superfluous. I chose A-Team because there were some unnamed other critics who had liked it. Now I want you to know also that I never watched the television show so I had no preconceived noti

Harry Connick Jr.- Swoony Crooner and Jazzy Tuner Or Help, I am turning into My Mother

My mother loved jazz. Her favourites were Billie Holiday (really blues) and Louis Armstrong and the Big Bands. I confess to loving Billie Holiday myself and even a few Louis tunes. I love Ray Charles . Otherwise I have avoided jazz. Of course I knew Harry Connick Jr.- the bad boy who was reputed to have made homophobic remarks but who was nonetheless totally, almost forgiveably, hot. Okay, so I am deeply shallow. My friend Matt is turning 40 next week. I asked if he might like to be my guest

Last night I went to see the summer blockbuster,The Eclipse. Late this afternoon I went to see the little indie film that won Best film at Sundance,Winter Bones. These films are exact opposite sides of a coin, proving yet again that money does not buy good movies. It can, contrary to some opinions, occasionally buy happiness. Eclipse pretends to be this complex tale of the tortured romance between a girl and a vampire. What should she do, stay with the nice Aboriginal boy back home,Jake, o

CYRUS or Can you spell manipulation by group of unattractive males and females

I thought Cyrus was supposed to be a comedy on purpose. Instead it was a sappy, predictable  melodrama with a few funny lines spoken by a bunch of totally unhot actors and actresses. John C. Reilly describes himself in the movie as “Shrek”, so at least he gets points for self-awareness. Jonah Hill, who was funny in “Get him to the Greek”, is annoying and petulant and I just wanted to slap him and send him to Boot Camp. Hmm…Boot Camp sounds pretty good actually. And what has ha

Lesbian double bill at the movies – The Kids are all right and The Girl who played with Fire

I remember when I saw the first film about HIV , Philapdelphia , and then the first film about with a woman with HIV played by Mary Louise Parker.

I remember when I saw the first film about HIV , Philapdelphia , and then the first film about with a woman with HIV played by Mary Louise Parker. In both cases I was so relieved to see myself up there that I forgave almost every flaw in the films ( there were more in the latter than the former.) I can only write these reviews from my vantage point of a straight woman who wants to see good films with good stories and good acting. In one case I did and in one case I didn’t. I did not think

Review of Dinner for Schmucks, Ramona and Beezus and I am love-August 4th 2010

I loved Dinner for Schmucks. I generally don’t like slapstick comedy. It relies too much on making fun of other people’s failings, weaknesses and disabilities.

One hit and two near misses I loved Dinner for Schmucks. I generally don’t like slapstick comedy. It relies too much on making fun of other people’s failings, weaknesses and disabilities. This movie does too but the “butts” of the jokes, so to speak, are corporate businessmen. No problem there. The jokes are suitably silly and the gags hilarious. Steve Carrell is a very funny guy, no doubt. Just go and get your endorphins jiggling.   Ramona and Beezus The young girl who pl

It's finally Spring and I have relocated to Toronto. Why? Because I am getting married and it was time for me to start a new life for the new year. The past few years in New York City had been really rough ones for me. The scene had changed into a popularity clique. No longer were there experienced DJ's headlining at the clubs and bars. It was all the new kids who had no clue about mixing or programing. Watching legends like Troy Parrish being pushed aside for lip glossed, rhinestoned headphon

"This Is Why I Don't Like To Play Reggae In Gay Bars and Clubs" by DJ Relentless

Often when I am working at a bar or a club, I notice that there is always some young kid (ages from 18 to 25) who will run up to the booth and request the latest Reggae hit. I usually frown and then tell them that I don't like playing Reggae. Then I tell them that if they knew the politics and hatred that goes with that genre of music, they wouldn't be asking. They usually look as if I had three heads and a tail and then proceed to tell me that this is what the kids are listening to these days

"I Am" (The Remixes) Mary J. Blige (Geffen Records) The first time I heard this song, I was at a drag performance of Toronto's legendary Michelle Ross. I recognized Mary's voice and hoped that there were some remixes. Well, I got my wish. I found two remixes. Erek McQueen & Nick Harvey both gave the song a make-over. The one that got my attention was the Nick Harvey Private Club Mix. He gave it energy without making her sound like some sped up chipmunk with cheesy Hi-NRG production. **** "Hard

“Do Fries Go With That Retro Hit?”

I dont get it. Why are we even spending time on some child who hasn’t reached puberty yet?

After spinning for “Vogue Night” at Gladaman’s Den last night, my fiancee and I were kinda lunchie. So, we decided to check out the new Hero Burger on Church Street. John thought that is was some kind of healthy burger place, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that not only did they serve great juicy burgers with amazing onion rings but some of my favorite retro tunes. “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield and “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar. And let’s face

"Would it be rude todedicate Jade Elektra's "R.I.F (Reading Is Fundamental)" to those who are not smart enough to figure out what to do when invited to a virtual wedding?" Because most of my friends and family are back in the United States, John and I decided to create a virtual wedding event on facebook so they could feel like they were a part of our special day. We thought that everyone would have read the invitation and figured out that they were not actually attending a real wedding.

There’s a moment in the documentary “Paris Is Burning” where Dorian Corey says something to the effect of “We were trying to emulate Marilyn Monroe.....I didn’t realize I shoulda been trying to be Lena Horne.” while describing who the queens would do as showgirls on the original Ballroom scene in the ‘70’s. I was very sad to hear the news of Lena Horne’s death on Mother’s Day. She being a mother not only to her own children, but also to so many young black actress and perf
