All About Evil: by Joshua Grannel aka Peaches Christ

I literally had chills while watching All About Evil, no I really did.  This cold I’ve gotten seems to have gotten worse and dug in just in time for the After Dark Film Festival. To say how much I enjoyed the film, despite feeling terrible, would be an under statement. In the end I was so glad I forced myself out last night.

This was how determined to see this first feature film by Joshua Grannell, aka Peaches Christ, a local San Francisco midnight horror, cult movie host.

Fay Slift showed up to host the pre-screening costume contest. Another first for me as I had yet to see this now infamous local queen and entertainer. And as a former make up artist, I did love both Fay's and Peaches make up. The prom queen was staffer at Toronto After Dark Film Festival deservingly won.

I new from this beginning that this was going to be a good low-budget (amazingly well done for the resources) camp black humour horror movie. I sensed it from amazing and very clever artwork produced for the opening credits and featured during the film as posters for the movie theatre owner whose fallen into horror moving making madness.  With a reference to Jonestown, one can see Joshua’s influences of John Waters and many others, yet all the while cleverly making it his own.

“I wanted to the actors to push their acting, but not so much they are winking at you.” (I’m paraphrasing from memory_

Secondly, there is the cast. Three is no doubt Peaches Christ is a force to be wreckin with such as Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) Mink Stole, the little cutie Thomas Dekker, from "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles", as well as a few appearances from Peaches Christ herself, along with a few other queens.

This film is packed full of precious little moments that I just not give away and spoil these gems.

Peaches Christ, cast & crew have been touring throughout the US with quite a production bringing out characters for the screenings. This sounds like something that should not be missed, and we need here in Toronto

Since the Bloor Cinema is eerily like The Victoria Theatre, home to Deborah (the mad directrice featuring her shorts such as “The Maiming of the Shrew & The Diaries of Anne Frankenstein are brilliant titles), I think we should take up the cause to get “All About Evil” show to come to the Bloor Cinema.

The queer community is the perfect place to start this populist movement. As I keep hearing at the festival, it is the fans that make movies come to life. We now have the power in the day of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking avenues to put pressure on theatres and distributors to release films.

A screening of All About Evil with the traveling “Stage Show” as Joshua puts it, would be as much fun, or more than the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I already know which character I’d dress up as.

I’m writing a piece on The After Dark Festival, so I’m being judicious with every post, as I’m saving bits and pieces to keep fresh for the article. I’ll let you know when that comes out.

These images here include Joshua with Fay Slift (not dressed as Peaches for the night) helping out with the costume contest.

Sexy Eli Roth & The Last Exorcism World Premiere in Toronto

Sexy Eli Roth & The Last Exorcism World Premiere in Toronto

This week’s all week horror extravaganza reached its summit when the After Dark Film Festival had its first red carpet premiering of a film in their five-year run.

Everyone was out, Entertainment Tonight, Global, and of course the little guys like me and the horror outlets who routinely cover the festival. Although for me, this is my first time as press, les alone have a press pass.

In  the name of honesty, I do have to say I was put off by the security. Now when I hear 9 security guards will be withwith Eli Roth, the famous actor/director and now producer (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2, Inglorious Bastards) I had imagined tasteful suited bodyguards, you know how you see in the movies.  Instead we saw guys in security uniforms, bullet proof vests lining up all over the place as if the Bloor Cinema had half a dozen ATMs in the process of getting filled up.

Yes, I know it’s Eli Roth, but outside of the horror world, most people don’t even know who he is, and as nice as the cast was, who knew them either. I suppose the horror genre (especially when you create torture porn films gone extreme) does bring out some crazies, and maybe it was needed. But it seemed like overkill that will leave some debating star presence at the festival.

Nonetheless, I tried my best to get at least a decent photo. My videos are taken from the post-screening Q&A and are fun.

I gotta say once he started speaking to the audience, he was not only is he incredibly hot – I have a thing for Jewish guys what can I say – but he is very funny and likable, as well as very comfortable in his own skin.

The Last Exorcism began with no credits, nothing. At first I wondered if this was the short they play prior to the feature. But we had already seen that. The tone of the film was more mockumentary featuring a charlatan reverend who sees his work as a means to an end (money), and begins to question his ethics and decides he is only going to do one more fake exorcism, get it on tape to show inner workings of religious fraud to the world.

There is one problem, there really is something up with the girl. In the beginning, the film is actually quite funny, and makes one wonder, “Is this really going to be a scary movie.”

Given the rash of POV (point of view) movies I wondered how this sub-genre movie would hold up. In the end I really loved it. Tension is built by not being able to see everything going on. Just as in The Exorcism of Emily Rose, no special effects were used in this film.

Get these two actresses at a party together and they could really creep people out.

I’m not saying go see this movie because Eli Roth promised to blow everyone in the theatre if we said to (being in the same room as Eli, and included in a en mass blow job is as close as I’m going to get to my fantasy), I’m saying it’s good fun, goods scary moments – with a “What the fuck?” kind of ending.

I have to give a MAJOR SPOILER ALERT to my Q&A videos. If you have no intention at all of seeing this movie, or don’t care if you hear a post analysis of this flic, then watch. Otherwise, go see it, come back and watch video.

The Last Exorcism opens in Toronto August 27, 2010.

Zombies! Robogeishas! Video Post - After Dark Film Festival 2010

Zombies! Robogeishas! Video Post - After Dark Film Festival 2010

I did take a couple clips out of the Doghouse and Evil in the times of Hero's trailers on Youtube. If this is some heinous violation on copyright, I will take it off and re-edit. Until then, it stays as is.

Saturday night at the After Dark Film Festival, Canada’s premiere – and probably only horror movie film festival had the theme night of “Zombie Appreciation Night” and I covered this night in my first PostiveLite.com video in ages!

Having the press pass has been wonderful. The first night I was feeling a bit out of place. There are clearly a set of folks who form the horror genre media clan, and they were gathered at the front. I stopped on to ask if I had to wait in the line up, or what. I was told to just walk in where it says VIP etc.

Even though I knew I could do this, I felt bad for cutting in front of everyone. Many press pass holders don’t know you can do this and stay in the line up. Me, I just bolt for the door and get out of everyone’s way thinking “Please don’t hate me!” with a slight feeling of privilege.

Hey if anyone wants to become HIV positive and create his or her own online webzine with the goal of just being ourselves and not a pathology, then hey go ahead. I’ve sunk in almost my entire savings to get PositiveLite.com going, just as there is with HIV, there ought to be some perks somewhere.

And one of those perks is being right up close to Eli Roth, the hottest Jewish boy in horror. Probably the hottest horror movie director/producer there is.  Tonight is the premiere of “The Last Exorcism.”

Advance tickets are sold out, but there are a block available at 6 pm @ Bloor Cinema.

Yesterday I went to see two wonderful films. “Cargo” a Swiss film (I was primed for it by my two recent weeks in Austria). This Sci-Fi (Switzerland’s first) was stunningly beautiful, and even though the story line isn’t quite unique – deception unveiled while in dark space – they way it cinematography and storytelling was beautiful.  The incredible part of this story is that “Cargo” was only filmed on 2 million dollars.

Finally, the movie that has become an instant cult classic, Robogeisha, through its trailer was so much fun on a bizarre level that only the classic Japanese director Noboru Iguchi, well known for The Machine Girl.  I have to add this quote in, as I was stoked afterwards being a cult movie goer myself.

“Violent, unrepentantly silly….loaded with wildly over the top set pieces… an explosion of cult excess…truly remarkable”  - Twitch Film

Two Glamorous RoboGeishas at last night's TADFF2010 screeningn of Robogeisha.

The trailer says it all. You must watch it.  If you like this genre, tonight at 9:45 don’t miss out on “Alien Vs. Ninja”
