Masking Our Fears

In the spirit of Halloween, The Day of the Dead and all things scary..

..this is a wonderful time to remind ourselves that playing, and playing with our fears is a powerful way to take the edge off of what scares us.

Halloween is a holiday that celebrates the coming of darkness (winter), death and the spiritual world.  It’s evolved into a celebratory event where we get to dress up as something or someone we only dream, or fantasize, of being and stepping playfully into it.  Halloween allows us the freedom to put on a real mask and reveal a part of ourselves we may not normally do.


Taking that mask off and facing our fears (of death, darkness or whatever) can be terrifying.

We all have something in our lives that causes us some degree of fear, anxiety, or concern: our finances, career, health, or relationship and the list goes on.

Here’s the thing I hear most often from clients:  that what people fear when they take off the mask that reveals their true self will be so ugly, so awful that they’ll disintegrate in shame, disgust and self-loathing.

The thing is this: taking the mask off, noticing, feeling and talking about what scares us is how we take away its power.  It’s where we are our most beautiful, courageous, and powerful.
